Malaria Tablets and Malaria Prevention in Grimsby
Malaria is a serious illness spread by mosquito bites in many popular holiday and travel destinations, including parts of Africa, Asia, and Central and South America. At Grimsby Travel Clinic, part of Weelsby View Pharmacy, our team can assess your trip, advise whether you need malaria tablets, and help you stay protected from the first mosquito bite to your return home.
Do I need malaria tablets?
It depends on where you're going, when you're travelling, how long you're staying, and what you'll be doing. Risk can change from one region of a country to the next, and by season. That's why a personal consultation is more reliable than a general online checklist. We'll also take into account your age, health, any medication you take, and whether you're pregnant or travelling with children.
How malaria prevention works
Malaria prevention is not just about tablets. Good protection combines several steps, often remembered as ABCD:
Awareness: know whether your destination has a malaria risk.
Bite prevention: use insect repellent, cover your skin at dusk and dawn, and sleep under a treated bed net where advised.
Check: find out whether you need antimalarial tablets, and which type.
Diagnose: get urgent medical help if you feel unwell during or after your trip.
What happens at your malaria consultation
We review your destinations, travel dates, activities and medical history.
We discuss whether antimalarial tablets are recommended and which suit you.
Where appropriate, we supply your medication and explain exactly when to start, how to take it and how long to continue after you return.
We give you practical advice on bite prevention for your trip.
When should I book?
Book at least 6 to 8 weeks before you travel. Some antimalarial tablets need to be started before you leave and continued after you return, and the timing depends on the medication, so leaving it late can cause problems.
Malaria tablets FAQs
How long before I travel should I start taking malaria tablets? It depends on the type. Some are started a day or two before you travel, while others need a couple of weeks. We'll give you the exact dates for your trip.
Do I need to keep taking them after I come home? Yes. Antimalarial tablets must be continued for a set period after you return. Stopping early can leave you unprotected.
Is there a malaria vaccine for travellers? There isn't a malaria vaccine routinely used for UK travellers. Protection relies on bite prevention and, where needed, antimalarial tablets.
Can children take malaria tablets? In many cases, yes, with doses based on age and weight. Please tell us the ages of everyone travelling when you book.
What should I do if I feel unwell after my trip? Malaria symptoms can appear weeks or even months after travelling. If you develop a high temperature or flu-like symptoms during or up to a year after visiting a malaria risk area, get urgent medical advice and tell the doctor where you've been.
