Hepatitis A and Typhoid Vaccinations in Grimsby

Hepatitis A and typhoid are two of the most common infections travellers pick up from contaminated food and water. They're a risk in many parts of Asia, Africa, Central and South America and the Middle East, particularly where sanitation is poorer. Grimsby Travel Clinic, part of Weelsby View Pharmacy, can protect you with the right vaccines, along with practical advice on staying healthy abroad.

What are hepatitis A and typhoid?

  • Hepatitis A is a viral infection that affects the liver. It can make you feel very unwell for weeks, with symptoms such as tiredness, nausea and yellowing of the skin and eyes.

  • Typhoid is a bacterial infection that can cause a prolonged high fever, stomach pain and other symptoms, and can become serious without treatment.

Who should have these vaccines?

They're commonly recommended for travellers to areas with poor sanitation or limited access to clean water, particularly if you're staying for a longer period, travelling off the beaten track, eating street food, or visiting friends and family. We'll recommend what's right for your destination, your itinerary and your health.

How the vaccines work

  • Hepatitis A: a first dose gives protection, and a booster given later extends this to long-lasting protection.

  • Typhoid: a single injection, with protection that typically lasts around three years.

  • A combined hepatitis A and typhoid vaccine may be an option for some travellers.

Ideally have your vaccines at least 2 weeks before you travel, but it's still worth asking if you're closer to departure.

NHS or private?

Some travel vaccines, including hepatitis A and typhoid, may be available free through your GP surgery on the NHS. If you'd rather book at a time that suits you, without waiting for a GP appointment, we provide these vaccinations privately.

Hepatitis A and typhoid FAQs

Do I need both vaccines? Not necessarily. It depends on your destination, how long you're staying and what you'll be doing. We'll advise at your consultation.

How long does protection last? Typhoid protection typically lasts around three years. Hepatitis A gives long-lasting protection once the booster dose is completed.

Can children have these vaccines? Yes, in many cases. Please tell us the ages of everyone travelling when you book.

Do the vaccines mean I can eat and drink anything? No. No vaccine protects against every illness. Safe food and water habits remain important, and we'll give you practical advice.
