Every year, we get the same question at both our Grimsby pharmacies: "Do I qualify for a free flu jab, or do I have to pay?" Eligibility isn't always obvious, so here's a clear rundown of who qualifies for the NHS flu vaccination this year, and what your options are if you don't.

Who qualifies for a free NHS flu jab?

You're generally eligible for a free flu vaccination on the NHS if you fall into one of these groups:

• Adults aged 65 and over

• Pregnant women

• Children in eligible school year groups (usually offered through school vaccination programmes)

• People aged 6 months to 64 years with certain long-term health conditions, including asthma, diabetes, heart disease, and chronic kidney, liver or neurological conditions

• People living in long-stay residential care

• Carers who receive Carer's Allowance, or who are the main carer for an older or disabled person

• Frontline health and social care workers, including some care home staff
  
  What if I don't fall into an eligible group?

  You can still get a flu jab, it just won't be free through the NHS. A private flu vaccination is available to anyone who wants protection, and is worth considering if you're in regular close contact with vulnerable people, work in a public-facing role, or simply want to reduce your risk of a bad flu season.
